Devlyn Van Loon
What’s your background, and what motivates you to do what you do?
I graduated from the Ryerson School of Fashion in 2012. I thoroughly enjoy being able to create unique pieces that are easy supplements to people’s lifestyles. I love creating and gain genuine pleasure from seeing what I create out in the world.
How would you describe your brand?
If I had to characterize my clothing in three words they would be: streamlined, practical and beautiful. I chose to design and manufacture in Canada because it is important to me to help support and promote local artists. Every piece of clothing is individually produced in my studio. I try to use sustainable fabrics and techniques in my process. Another thing I focus on is making everything as comfortable as possible, so I use a lot of soft fabrics.
What is your designing process?
I start off with sketching out ideas. Then at the beginning of the season I narrow them down to form an interesting, cohesive collection. The next stage is sampling, where a lot more editing happens – this is the stage I enjoy the most. Then I start testing the fit and wear. I’ve asked a few friends with different body shapes to try my pieces so I can see how they work on different people. All production is done in-house so things can get a little crazy when sampling and production for different seasons overlap.
What does success look like to you?
I’m usually pretty hard on myself so success is something that's constantly on the peripheral. But I’m so grateful to have my work appreciated by people. Right now success is seeing my pieces out there in the world being loved and lived in.“I’m a firm believer that clothing is for everyone and I don’t want to dictate who should or shouldn’t feel comfortable in the pieces I design.” ~ Devlyn Van Loon
